Funky Bait Reds

Received April 29th, 2000

The following is a true story, however, the names have been changed to protect those who just can't fish from being made too much fun of.

We were on the Texas/Louisiana border (in Texas waters) at daybreak, the temperature was in the 70's and the water was fairly calm, with just a tiny bit of roll to it.  We anchored and dropped 3 poles in at about 25 feet. For bait we were using funky old dead fish broken in half so the chunks were about 5 inches square, large single barb hooks and large teardrop weights. We also had a smaller pole going with dead shrimp, trying to catch some small croakers for bait.  With in 10 minutes we had our first strike, and a nice 27 inch red-fish was landed, this was on the dead fish.  About 5 minutes later the dead shrimp was hit at the surface and a 32 inch red-fish was landed.  10 minutes later I was back in action on the dead fish with a 40 + inch red-fish.

Not bad, about 30 minutes, 3 reds.  I caught 2, the 27 and 40+ and Chester landed the 32 incher.  Jack still hasn't caught anything, but let's not mention that...  The 27 inch boy was grilled, the 32 and 40+ guys were let go to be caught another day...
