The Green Sea Turtle is considered a threatened species throughout its worldwide tropical and subtropical range. The turtle is actually named for the greenish coloration of its fat and flesh.

Distribution: The Green Sea Turtle is a species with a global range. The
turtle is found in all tropical and subtropical oceans. They are a rare visitor to the Texas Coast.
Size: Green Sea Turtles are known to grow to 5 feet long. While individuals have been caught
that reached weights of up to 695 lbs., the average weight of mature individuals is around 440 lbs. The largest
turtle on record is 871 lbs.
Diet: Mature Green Sea Turtles spend most of their time in coastal, shallow waters
with lush seagrass beds, consuming seagrasses and algae, with small amounts of animal foods such as sponges,
crustaceans, sea urchins, and molluscs.
