Kayaks an Angling Alternative

One of the rising trends on the Texas Gulf Coast these days is fishing from kayaks. Texas fishermen now have another alternative to wading out in water up to their chest or heaving a bait as a land-lubber. This is a unique way for fishermen to be able to fish in places where they would otherwise need an expensive boat. They are easier to use than most folk's think and as an added bonus, you can get into places most boats can’t. For a few hundred dollars, you can purchase a kayak, get to where the fish are and, all the while, stay relatively dry.

Redfish and Kayak

There’s more to kayaking than hopping aboard and paddling out to catch that big trout. You need to become familiar with a kayak. Learn how to carry your fishing gear. Learn how to properly paddle with a kayak. Take a class to get the basics down. Most places that sell kayaks also offer kayak training classes for a nominal fee.

Fishing kayaks are different from what most folk’s idea is of a kayak. Most folk's tend to think of them as the little plastic bullet bouncing down the white water rapids while someone struggles to remain upright. Fishing kayaks are a little wider to prevent them from tipping over.

If you plan on pursuing a little saltwater fishing in a kayak, become familiar with the tides where you're fishing. If you get caught trying to buck a running tide, your return trip can be quite exhausting. Also, these are small watercraft -- remain alert to other boaters around you. The other guy should be paying attention too but, if he's not, need I say more. One last thing, Always Wear Your Flotation Device.
