Sow Snappers a'Plenty
Thursday August 5, 1999
Capt. Tony Langston of the Texsun II took a boat load of
us to an area about 60 miles ESE of Galveston Island for one of the best snapper trips
I've been on in years.
Several wrecks and old coral outcroppings in 75' to 80' of water were fished.
We were fishing Spanish Sardines fished at or near the bottom over a wreck in 75' of water
and with in roughly 30 minutes, 39 sow red snapper from 14 to 21 pounds had been decked!
The boat's total catch for the day included: 42 sow snapper from 14 to 21 pounds and 15
"keepers", 3 kingfish to 18 pounds, 10 lane snapper and 1 gag grouper of 12
pounds.
Like I said, this trip was one of the best trips I've been on. I caught 2 sows, one that
would go about 17 pounds and another that was pushing 21 pounds. I caught both of these
fish back to back within the first 10 minutes after we dropped anchor. My tennis elbow
started giving me fits, so I stowed the rod and concentrated on trying to coach my son and
daughter into catching a sow of their own.
My son just about lost his rod when his sow hit his sardine like
a runaway freight train. His fish hit the scales right at 20 pounds. My daughter didn't
manage to catch a sow, but the 3 of us caught plenty of "chunk backs" and had an
enjoyable quality family outing together.
